No, Mitt, The Ukraine War Is Not An America Interest
On January 26, 2023, Senator Mitt Romney posted on Twitter that American support of Ukraine in its war with Russia is in American’s interests.
His first reason is “humanitarian reality” of the suffering in Ukraine. Sorry, Senator, the humanitarian reality of the War in Ukraine is that millions more are suffering due to Western support of Ukraine than if we had pushed for a peaceful resolution at the beginning of the war or had seriously negotiated with Russia before the war even started. This was entirely a war pushed on Russia by NATO for NATO’s own goals.
The sanctions are hurting millions around the world, as oil and gas prices are much higher. People are dying from the inability to proper heat their homes. Food prices are climbing, in part, because of the war. Our national debt is going to the moon because of reckless spending to support Ukraine.
Lives are being lost because the war is being prolonged. A negotiated peace that would have provided the Donbass region with autonomy while remaining part of Ukraine would have saved all of the lives lost during the last year due to the war.
His second point is "We're just appalled by the fact that Russia has invaded a peaceful, sovereign nation next door." Truth is, we are not appalled. This was a long-term plan developed by the United States. And Ukraine was not peaceful at the time of invasion, but Ukraine had been killing civilians in the Donbass region since 2014, especially with intentional artillery strikes on civilians, including many young children.
As to sovereign, that is really stretching it. Ukraine wasn’t much of a nation after the fall of the Soviet Union. It suffered an US orchestrated color revolution in 2004, which opened the country up for greater exploitation by Ukrainian oligarchs and Western interests. Then, a decade later, the US conducted its Maidan coup of a democratically elected president, one who was trying to navigate between its two much more powerful neighbors, Russia and the EU/NATO. Ukraine has not been a sovereign nation since 2014 and instead is a US puppet regime.
So, Mitt, we are not appalled, Ukraine was not peaceful, and it was not sovereign.
And besides, the US has, by one count, invaded 201 times since the end of WW2. The chief invader of foreign countries of the last 78 years has been the USA. And that is not even talking about all the US backed coups and revolutions besides those 201 invasions. No country has engaged in more interference with sovereign nations over the last 78 years than the US. Let’s not be hypocritical, Mitt.
His third point was prosperity, “We have better jobs and better incomes and better prospects for our future if the world is at peace. If the world is in conflict, things aren't good for us as well as for other people around the world." Utter empty BS, Mitt. Come, on, now you are just outright lying to us.
This world has not been at peace for many lifetimes. And the future will not be brighter if the wrong people control the world. And things can be very good for America even when there is war in distant lands, especially if we do not get involved.
During the booming times of the 1980s, when Reagan was making America great again, there was an on-going war between Iraq and Iran, along with many other conflicts around the war. We didn’t get too involved, except to tacitly support Saddam against Iran and try to protect the oil shipping out, but we sure didn’t go into crisis mode because there was yet another random war going on.
Libya was also trying to invade Chad during the 80s. Reagan did bomb Libya once and we did confront Libya occasionally, but it really didn’t impact the economy at home.
I could go on with a lot of other wars. Oh, and the Cold War was still happening during the 80s, but the economy was great, at least most of the time, especially once we moved on from the Carter disaster.
His next point is that we could get pulled into the conflict if we don’t jump right in. Stupid, stupid, stupid. And utter nonsense.
His goes on with the idea that we are weakening Russia by supporting Ukraine and depleting its military. No, we really are not. We are actually strengthening the Russia military, by giving it real-world testing situations and helping Russia develop better tactics and strategies and weapons. The sanctions we imposed on Russia a decade ago actually helped Russia become stronger domestically and improve its own production. Like that, the war is helping Russia deal with US technology and learn to defeat it.
He claims China is Russia’s only ally and that we are weakening China by hurting Russia. Except that the sanctions have caused huge changes in the global trade system and financial system and Russia and China and their many allies and friends are developing a separate money transferring system independent of American control. The BRICS group is getting stronger and most of the world does not support the West in this conflict. Russia and Iran are closer than ever, Saudi Arabia is becoming better friends with China, and India and China might actually be able to work out their differences, given that they are now working to develop closer ties.
We are neither weakening China nor Russia and we are not isolating them either. Get your head out of your backside, Mitt, and see the bad results coming from this failed policy.
He also said, "So I just note, that if you don't think we should be spending on Ukraine, then you probably should say we shouldn't be spending on national defense. And that makes no sense at all." Mitt, you are just saying nonsense. Spending money on Ukraine has nothing to do with defending the United States of America and everything to do with expanding the America empire. If Mitt wanted to defend America, he would fund building the wall and support strict immigration enforcement. If Mitt wanted to defend the US economy, he would support American industry and oppose free trade. Mitt would care about protecting our intellectual property. And if Mitt really wanted America to be strong, he would push for policies that hurt the American oligarchs and free the American economy.
I don’t think Mitt is an idiot, but he sure tries to make himself out to be one here. Mitt is just a mouthpiece for the globalists. He really needs to come up with a lot better reasons to be in Ukraine.
